High/Scope

Perea uses the High/Scope curriculum. High/Scope views children as "active learners" and teaches them how to make decisions. The children do this by making a plan, working to complete their plan and then review the plan that they made.

The Child Observation Record (COR) helps teachers support and extend the child's planned activities during the day. The key experiences provide a way of thinking about the curriculum that allows the teachers to use hands-on active learning versus workbooks or worksheets as well as help the teachers to observe each child and write anecdotal notes. These notes describe the child's interactions in initiative, social relations, creative representation, music and movement, language and literacy and mathematics and science. The teachers use these notes to evaluate the children's development status. Parents receive a copy of this evaluation twice a year.

Parent involvement is the key to making our curriculum effective. We encourage parents to volunteer so they can see how High/Scope helps the child make decisions and choices.

Learn more about High/Scope at www.highscope.org.

Staff Training

All staff members have been trained in the High /Scope curriculum as well as many aspects of early childhood development and teaching. Our Staff Trainer is available for questions and consultation and monitors classrooms and lesson plans to ensure adherence to High/Scope methodology and school policy.

Speech and Language Therapy

Children begin to learn language very early in life. As they grow and develop, their language skills become increasingly complex. They learn to comprehend and to learn and to communicate effectively with others. Speech therapy insures that this process takes place smoothly and easily for each child.

Children referred by parents and teachers are screened and tested in the fall to discover specific delays or difficulties in expressive and receptive language, articulation, vocabulary and early literacy knowledge. Goals are established based on test results. Children are re-tested at the end of the year to check progress and determine if goals have been met. Recommendations for the following year are made at this time.
